Ask Derek: Where Do You See Yourself in 5 Years?
I was reading some of your comments in the forum a few days ago and came across this question from Krissy: What’s in stock for you, Derek? What are you looking to do? Where will you be in 5 years?
A lot of you have asked about my future and what direction I see myself headed. No one can ever know for sure where he will be five years from now, but I know where I want to be. I see myself doing what I love and continuing to learn as I do it. I want to experience different stages, whether it’s through film, behind the camera directing, with music or in theatre. No matter what it is I’m doing, all I know for sure is I will never stop learning!

I have many goals in the next 5 years, but the ones I am most passionate about are getting married this year, developing my career as a dietitian, and getting back into my hobby I love best - ballroom dancing. What routines will I do next Viennese Waltz? Salsa? Tango? Or maybe all of the above! You inspire me, Derek! :) -
I see myself living my dream of being a novel writer, movie script writer, address, and singer!

My plans are working on my Degrees, which are Associates which I'm working on now. After my Associates, next is Bachelor's and Master. Wish me luck.

I honestly can't say where I will be in 5 years, but I can say I'll be where life takes me. I'm hoping that it it will lead me to help people in some way, giving back to the community, or just being there when I'm needed. -
My main goal is to finish grad school in 2014 strong and finally find a job in my field that I can grow with and get settled somewhere. There have been times where I've almost given up and just settled for doing something else that might be easier to get into in these tough economical times, but then I hear that motivational kicker in the back of my head: "If you're not happy with something in your life, change it." I want to get to a point where I do what I love and love what I do. I can't say that yet. So my goal is to be there or get closer to being there in 5 years. ish. Just getting there is the main goal! -
What is something you feel like you haven't gotten to experience yet that you "should have" already?

Weird that I'm having a hard time with this one. I achieved the one big goal I ever had since I was 13 and that was owning my own gym. Now I would like a bigger gym lol. I've outgrown my space. But all my goals now seem small in comparison, but maybe not. I want to leave a legacy - gymnastics is more than just splits and tricks. It's life lessons and I have these little kids looking at me with these big eyes and smiles, so excited to be in the gym. Passing on the passion is my continued next goal :))

So I don't know where I see myself in 5 years I just hope that now I can learn as much as I can about dance I love ballet the problem is I came across it very very late still I'm doing ok at it better than I expected but not as good as I want yet still I have hope for a bigger chance to learn and do more in dance
do you have any advice for me? I wish I could learn others styles to I just don't know where to find someone brave enough to teach an adult seriously, could you give me some direction? In 5 years I see myself a pretty well known author, hopefully get a few of my songs out there and being able to travel to get items for my future business. I actually hope to see it happen sometime this year or the following. My passion is singing for the LORD mainly and to see my business expand. I also see myself in a huge church in my hometown!! I wouldn't mind if that happens first. :) The future is bright for all of us and if we make this world a better and safer place, well as safe as its ever going to get we all could do so much good as well as great and mighty things!! :)

I'm with you, the world is your oyster and there is so much to learn. I plan though to be an accomplished creator, whether that be as an artist, a published author or both. I know I've already been extremely blessed and successful having raised three amazing children on my own. I have also been looking after my 91 year father whom I have helped become prescription drug free because the medical system failed him! He has never been better. Raising a family and keeping the home running smoothly has been a career in itself, but it is my goal in the five years or sooner to put more energies into my passion of art, publishing my children's books and helping to heal the world one day at a time. God bless all those who have dreams and wishes and may their roads be successful in every way. -

I feel the same as you do. I don't know where I will be but my plans are to be an entertainer in someway. Hopefully, further my dancing skills, make a record, and, or, do a movie that tells a great story. Either way, art will be in my life always! XO

Hey Derek, I have no idea what my next five years will bring. I would like to go on at least a 10 day cruise, enjoying the fresh air, good food, and meeting people. I will be 74 in February, and know I am blessed. I don't have a lot, but do have what I need. I hope to see you as often as possible in the next 5 years and later, whether it is on tv, movies, or Broadway, as watching you perform makes my day brighter. You are an amazing young man, Derek, and a delight!

In 5 years, I hope to have at least 3 films under my belt.
Running successful full body spa/boutiques around the world. Having a non-profit called Risen Phoenix Experience that will cater to cancer patients. (wigs, help with meds, etc.) -

In five years, I see myself completing my Bachelor's degree in Apparel Studies, and learning new things about fashion and the industry. Also, I hope to open my own store front/boutique.
Maybe within the next 5 years, I will get to travel out of the country to Europe or maybe London, England?! -

Thanks for sharing what you see yourself doing, the way you are going, you would accomplish them all before 5 years!
5 years is a long time to look ahead, but I have started doing what I envisage for myself, I taken my Masters & I am in my last year of my PhD in Oncology (Cancer) I have written a paper on the study of Cancer in young. I’m from England so our qualifications might be different.
Whilst doing that, I studied and passed my Head Coach exam in gymnastics, I took up the sport as I wanted to show the young children, that anything is possible and yes they can one day be the next Shawn Johnson or our Beth Tweddle.
What’s next for me? Well there is always meeting you!
